Places that house seniors in are investigated by the state and New York retirement homes are no exception. The cleanliness of a retirement home is something that most people are not as concerned with as they would be with another living facility for elderly people like a nursing home. Seniors are able to live in retirement homes typically after the age of 50. A 50-year-old person is usually able to think, speak and care for himself. The state and others do not regulate these living conditions as heavily as they would a nursing home or somewhere that a senior aged person may be less likely to speak up if there were a heath concern or safety issue. Retirement homes are much like an apartment complex or other condominium community in that should a resident see an issue with the place, he or she will submit a work order or formal written complaint to the management and a member of the staff who maintains the building will be over to assess and repair.
Often, elderly people are not able to voice their opinions for fear of repercussion and the need to avoid a conflict. For this reason many seniors are allowing the conditions or retirement homes and retirement communities to become dilapidated and in many cases disgusting. The cleanliness and the safety concerns are now being monitored by state inspections. Not only are there codes and regulations with regard to any apartment complex or multifamily unit in New York, but the centers for aging and senior protection groups are able to ensure that these standards of cleanliness and safety are met or exceeded for the elderly people living in retirement homes.
Family and friends of senior aged people are often visiting their loved ones. Should there be an area of concern with regard to the retirement home or the surrounding area, family and friends may be able to take the concern up with the management of the place. In many cases, there may be a closed or outstanding lawsuit or legal action pending against a retirement home. This is something that you may want to consider and the nature of the legal matter. It helps to be educated and do research before selecting a place to retire. Many leases are lengthy and it will be difficult for a senior to move once he or she has committed to one of the retirement homes as his or her place of residency.
In the event of a natural disaster or should there be a reason that the apartments within a retirement home not be able to be occupied, the retirement home should have a contingency plan. These are matters that can be discussed with the management of the community. Retirement homes are a safe and viable option for an aging person to choose during the later years. There are many New York retirement homes available for rent, lease or purchase, so do your research and choose wisely.
