Digital videos on Facebook a novel strategy to communicate anti-violence messages grounded in community-based research

PHILADELPHIA (April 23, 2012)--- Briana and Damon could be the kids up the block. Briana does well in school and wants to follow in her sister's footsteps to college. Damon works hard at an after-school job in a local barbershop. They hang out with friends and try to stay out of trouble.

But Briana and Damon have a mission. Voiced by Philadelphia teens, they are a pair of digitally animated street-smart characters with a Facebook page aimed at reducing urban youth violence. Working with West Philadelphian residents who are members of the Philadelphia Area Research Community Coalition, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University and the Philadelphia Collaborative Violence Prevention Center (PCVPC) created Briana and Damon as a novel strategy to communicate anti-violence messages grounded in community-based research. The researchers reported their findings in the American Journal of Community Psychology this month and launched the Briana and Damon animated videos on the Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Briana-and-Damon-Violence-Prevention/140386882682185

The characters and their stories are the product of years of community-based participatory research from the PCVPC, a project funded by the Centers for Disease Control to address violence in Philadelphia.

Researchers often focus on communicating results of studies to others in their field, but getting practical advice to the communities they serve is often more important, according to lead author Dr. Nicole Vaughn, an assistant professor at the Drexel University School of Public Health.

"Our question was: How do we get research back to the community?'" said co-author Dr. Therese S. Richmond, of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. "Community-based participatory research enables us to develop strategies for violence prevention side-by-side with members of the affected community, but it's unusual for researchers to disseminate their findings back in the community itself."

This project brings the research to life. "It's so important in violence prevention to really engage youth in the solution," Vaughn said.

"Our community partners told us: 'Don't just tell us what kids say, tell us what we can do about it, what we can do as adults to create positives,'" said. Richmond, the Andrea B. Laporte Endowed Term Associate Professor at Penn Nursing. "We identified strategies, interpreted them in an appealing way, and linked them with evidence-based actions the community can take to decrease violence."

At that point, the group had the research, but needed the medium. "We learned from the community youth that digital animation speaks to this age group and in this community," said Richmond. "Our young participants told us, 'This is what we'll pay attention to. This is what will be cool.'"

Working with an animator, a focus group with participants between the ages of 10 and 17 reviewed the storyboards and offered feedback. "The kids worked with us on developing the characters, making them look and sound trendy and urban," said Richmond. To make the scenes more authentic, the youth participants provided the animator with descriptions of their own neighborhoods and discussed the types of violent acts that they've known peers to commit, such as shoplifting and damaging property. For genuine characterizations in the videos, the youth participants were asked to voice the characters. In addition, youth were also provided with information from the animator about career paths in the field and ways to continue to be involved in youth violence prevention which Vaughn stated was an example of "co-learning", a key principle of community based participatory research. "Learning from the youth about their communities while also giving them the opportunity to learn from a professional in the field of digital design, marketing and animation was a valuable part of this project," said Vaughn.

Briana and Damon debuted in January 2011at a PCVPC community symposium. The youth who voiced the characters were celebrated in the symposium. "Having the youth debut the characters and work the community event with over 250 attendees was exciting for them. The youth had the experience of being a part of the development and delivery of the product to the community and they were well received," said Vaughn. A public transportation ad was also developed that featured the characters and their anti-violence credo.

Each of the five, one-minute videos has a single, distinct message: avoiding peer pressure, working hard, keep calm, finding a role model and deciding against retribution. In "Barbershop," a real-life barber voiced a character who gives Damon an after-school job in his shop and appreciates his diligence. In "Role Models," Briana gives a class presentation on why her sister, a college student, is her role model.

"Engaging youth and adults from the community to develop strategies and tools for sharing research results can improve the meaning, acceptance and translation of the results into community programs and action," said Richmond. "This further encourages partnership between community members and researchers to study issues important to the community."

Vaughn said, "Involving the community in sharing research results adds more time to the process, but we think the product is that much richer. The community receives the message well because their voices are reflected in it."

HTC EVO Design 4G coming to Boost Mobile 'end of this quarter'

HTC EVO Design 4G coming to Boost Mobile 'end of this quarter'

Boost customers might soon be able to bite off another bit of Android, according to Pocket Now. It's reporting that the HTC Evo Design 4G will be landing on the prepay network before the end of this quarter. It was running Gingerbread when we first got our hands on it, but will apparently be landing with Ice Cream Sandwich squeezed into its 1.2GHz single-core configuration. It's been a while since a new smartphone was offered up to the Boost faithful, so when the EVO 4G turns up it should be king of the pile, though we're not sure if it'll be asking an equally regal ransom when it does so.

Is Russia now the strongest backer of peace in Syria?

Russia has emerged as a strong backer of Kofi Annan's peace plan for Syria, and is now hammering Western nations for not doing enough to support it.

Russia today challenged Western countries to get behind United Nations envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan for Syria, or accept the blame for its failure.

It's a new role for Russia, which endured months of accusations that it was blocking a solution for strife-torn Syria after it vetoed two UN Security Council?resolutions in the past several months?calling for the removal of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.? ?

But last month, Moscow threw its weight behind Mr. Annan's plan to end the year-long uprising, which has killed more than 9,000 people by UN estimates. It called for a withdrawal of all government forces from Syrian towns and cities, followed by a shaky cease-fire that went into effect last Thursday and appears to be just barely holding despite multiple violations alleged on both sides.

Speaking in televised remarks today, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov implied that the shoe is on the other foot now, with Moscow strongly backing the UN peace plan for Syria and willing to hold both Mr. Assad and his opponents to task but, he alleged, the effort is being undermined by unnamed Western and Arab countries.

"There are those who want Kofi Annan's plan to fail," Mr. Lavrov insisted. "Today, those who from the beginning foretold the failure of Annan's plan are doing a lot to see to it that this prophecy comes true? They are doing this by delivering arms to the Syrian opposition and stimulating the activity of rebels who continue to attack both government facilities and civilian facilities on a daily basis."

The cease-fire remains "quite fragile" because of the reluctance of those outside forces to fully back the Annan plan, Lavrov suggested, although he added that Assad bears a share of blame for the continuing uncertainty. "Of course, government forces are also taking measures to react to such provocations, and as a result it is not all going very smoothly yet," he said.

Chamber Spotlight: Resume Bloopers and Blunders ? Pulaski ...

Since this is the time when employers are deluged with job applications from high school and college graduates, cover letters and resumes are on many minds.? Last week, we looked at some humorous bloopers and blunders from actual cover letters submitted to employers.? Not only was this designed to give a few laughs but, hopefully, to give a few pointers to those who are currently engaged in the process of looking for employment.

??????????????? Let?s say that your cover letter has passed the scrutiny of your prospective employer.

Next comes the resume.? This week, again in an effort to both amuse and educate, let?s look at some resume bloopers and blunders.? The typos and misspellings are intentional, as they are from actual

resumes submitted to potential employers.

??????????????? *I?m a rabid typist.

??????????????? *Develop and recommend an annual operation expense fudget.

??????????????? *Education:? College, August 1880 ? May 1984.

??????????????? *I was proud to win the Gregg Typting Award.

??????????????? *Here are my qualifications to overlook.

* I?m working today in a furniture factory as a drawer.

*I am about to enroll on a Business and Finance Degree with the Open University.? I feel that

this qualification will prove detrimental to me for future success.

*I belive that weakness is the first level of strength, given the right attitude and driving force.

?My school advised me to fix my punctuality.

*Then there was the resume that the candidate wrote as a play ? Act 1, Act 2, etc.

*Skills:? Strong Work Ethic, Attention to Detail, Team Player, Self Motivated, Attention to

Detail.

*One applicant used colored paper and drew glitter designs around the border.

*Why Interested in Position:? to keep my parole officer from putting me back in jail.

*Misspelled the word ?proofreading? in her skill set.

??????????????? *Objective:? Career on the Information Supper Highway.

??????????????? *Experience:? Stalking, shipping & receiving.

??????????????? *My duties included cleaning the restrooms and seating the customers.

??????????????? *Achievements:? Nominated for prom queen.

??????????????? *A resume was printed on the back of the person?s current employer?s letterhead.

??????????????? *Won a contest for building toothpick bridges in middle school.

??????????????? *One resume arrived with several grease stains and a smudge of chocolate on it.

??????????????? *Consistently tanked as top sales producer for new accounts.

??????????????? *Planned a new corporate facility at $3 million over budget.

??????????????? *Failed bar exam with relatively high grades.

??????????????? *Skills:? I can type without looking at thekeyboard.

??????????????? *Objective:? I want to play a major part in watching a company advance.

??????????????? *Objective:? So one of the main things for me is, as the movie ?Jerry McGuire? puts it,

????? ????????? ?Show me the money!?

??????????????? *Skills:? I have integrity so I will not steal office supplies and take them home.

??????????????? *Skills:? I have technical skills that will take your breath away.

??????????????? *Objective:? I would like to work for a company that is very lax when it comes to tardiness.

??????????????? *Education:? Have repeated courses repeatedly.

??????????????? *Salary requirements:? The higher the better.

??????????????? *Bad traits:? I am very bad about time and don?t mind admitting it.? Having to arrive at a

??????????????? certain hour doesn?t make sense to me.? What does make sense is that I do the job.? Any

??????????????? company that insists upon rigid time schedules will find me a nightmare.

??????????????? *References:? Bill, Tom, Eric.? But I don?t know their phone number.

??????????????? *Education:? I have a bachelorette degree in computers.

??????????????? *Skills:? Being bi-lingual in three languages.

??????????????? *Reason for leaving last job:? They didn?t allow me to surf the web as often as I?d like to.? They ??????????????

??????????????? weren?t very nice about it either.

???????????????????????????????

??????????????? If it happened to be YOUR business looking for employees, what would you think about these resumes?? It is probably safe to say that you would pass on these resumes and look further.? We hope you are enjoying a laugh or two along the way, and learning something as well.

House panel to boost funds for Israel's Iron Dome

(AP) ? A House panel is boosting money for Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system by $680 million amid an election-year fight over whether President Barack Obama is doing enough for the longtime Mideast ally.

The Republican-controlled Armed Services Committee, which begins crafting a fiscal 2013 defense budget next week, plans millions more for the system designed to intercept short-range rockets and mortars, according to a congressional aide. The money would be in addition to the $205 million that the Obama administration and Congress agreed to in a special request in the 2011 budget and would cover several years, through fiscal 2015.

The aide spoke on condition of anonymity in advance of the formal announcement on the budget.

An increase in money for the program was expected as the Pentagon said last month that it would work with Congress to steer more funds to a system that has proven effective in intercepting rockets and mortars fired by Palestinian militants from Gaza. The budget plan also comes as the Obama administration tries to dissuade Israel from launching a potential unilateral strike against Iran to stop its disputed nuclear development program.

"Supporting the security of the state of Israel is a top priority of President Obama and Secretary (Leon) Panetta," the Pentagon said last month. "The Department of Defense has been in conversations with the government of Israel about U.S. support for the acquisition of additional Iron Dome systems and intends to request an appropriate level of funding from Congress to support such acquisitions based on Israeli requirements and production capacity."

In addition, since 1988 and the early days of U.S.-Israeli cooperation on missile defense, presidents have proposed a specific amount for the program knowing full well that Israel will contact members of Congress and ask that they come up with more money. Congress routinely complies.

Last year, lawmakers took the overall request of $106 million for cooperative U.S.-Israeli missile defense programs and added millions more, providing $216 million.

This year, Republicans see a political opening in the uneasy relationship between Washington and Jerusalem over Israeli settlements in the West Bank and the state of Mideast peace talks, further complicated by the administration's pressure on Israel to hold off on a possible military strike against Iran.

The Iranian threat to Israel has stoked the bitter rhetoric both in Washington and on the presidential campaign trail, where likely nominee Mitt Romney has accused Obama of throwing Israel under a bus and emboldening the Palestinians. The fierce talk reflects that Jewish voters, who comprise only 2 percent of the electorate nationwide, are a critical part of Obama's base and could be the difference in close battleground states such as Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Nevada.

Obama's budget for next year calls for $3.1 billion in military assistance for Israel, a slight increase over the current level and the most for any foreign country. In February, Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, and Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., who heads the Foreign Affairs Committee, complained in a letter to Obama that his "record low" budget request jeopardized Israel's security.

'Magic Mike': Male Stripper Weighs In On Channing Tatum's Moves

New York dancer gives MTV News his professional opinion on how authentic the 'Magic Mike' trailer is.
By Jocelyn Vena

Bachelorette parties, beefy dudes and dollar bills — oh my! It must mean that the "Magic Mike" trailer dropped.

And, yes, the trailer is filled with lots of Channing Tatum goodness — read goodness as: he's shirtless, a lot — as well as cameos from fellow hunks Matthew McConaughey and Alex Pettyfer.

The trailer follows the story of Tatum's character, Magic Mike, as he tries to balance his life as a stripper with a budding romance and his dreams of designing furniture. It seems that the Steven Soderbergh-directed flick, which opens in June, will have lots of heart and lots of laughs.

Now, after watching the trailer several (hundred) times, MTV News decided to track down a real-life male stripper to rate just how authentic it really is. Here's what we learned.

The Bachelorette Party
"The bachelorette party, the whole thing is totally legit," New York-based dancer Steve Stanulis, who goes by the stage name Steve Savage, told MTV News about the trailer's opening scene. "I mean, with the guys coming in as cops and the girls, like, getting all nervous. So, that's pretty authentic. It looks pretty good."

The Money
"The whole thing with the singles? The funny thing is when I used to go to the bank, they'd be like 'Oh, my god. Why do you have $500 in singles?' " Savage, who runs Savage Men and helped create "Stripped, The Play," recalled of hitting the bank after a night of dancing like Magic Mike. "And that would be like the ongoing joke."

The Dancing
"The show looks pretty good, the guys dancing and the whole shtick with each guy coming out with a different routine," he said of several teased strip-club scenes that feature McConaughey and Tatum getting their shirtless grooves on. "They're a little overly elaborate, with all the smoke and spinning, but again that's not something you would really see. I mean we're not going to see Fosse. I mean, they did a great job. All the guys look great as well. They're totally believable as dancers."

The Relationships
"The whole rigmarole, as far as being in a relationship and being a stripper, 95 percent of the comments of the girlfriends or the significant others give are like, 'When are you gonna give this up? When are you gonna get a real job?' or what have you," he said of Tatum's onscreen love interest, Paige, played by Cody Horn. "So, they really captured that as well, which is really funny."

The Ambition
"I also like the fact that he's talking about being an entrepreneur because all these guys, well most of these guys, are not just strippers, they're doing other things," he explained of Tatum's dream to make furniture for a living.

The Bottom Line
So, will Savage see the flick? "I would definitely go see it," he said. "I would def recommend it. It looks good."
