Bill O?Brien Penn State ? Bill O?Brien, the New England Patriots offensive coordinator, is negotiating with Penn State to replace Joe Paterno as its head coach this week and sources familiar with the talks say an agreement could be made by Wednesday.
New England is heading into their bye week prior to the AFC divisional playoffs and Penn State?s concluding their season Monday in the TicketCity Bowl, so this is the perfect time of for the university to get their claws into him.
Just last week it was reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Mike Munchak from the Tennessee Titans was the man Nittany Lions were going after. However, Munchak has no interest in leaving Tennessee. Whereas, O?Brien?s contract is about to expire as the Patriots offensive coordinator.
During a recent Penn State pep rally, David Joyner, the university?s athletic director shot down questions about who will be replacing Paterno. In addition, Bill Belichick, the Patriot?s head coach would not comment on O?Brien?s future plans.
The Patriots have a history of grooming their offensive coordinators for head coaching positions. Perfect examples of this are Josh McDaniels going from the Patriots coordinator to the Broncos head coach and Charlie Weis moving from Patriots? coordinator to Notre Dame?s head coach.
Nov 2011 Joe Paterno was terminated from the university in the middle of the season. The school?s trustees thought this was the best decision following the arrest of Jerry Sandusky. The 85-year-old?s career record is 3 ties, 136 losses, and 409 wins. In 46 seasons as a head coach, Joe has had 38 winning seasons; according to the NCAA, he holds the record for the most wins by a Division, I-A/FBS football coach.
Update: Bill O?Brien?s agent dismisses the Penn State rumor that he?s currently in talks to take on the head coaching job. However, it is normal for agents to dismiss career-changing rumors during an active NFL season.
